Toronto NAJC President’s Report – April 2014

This month, I want to share news about some of the Toronto Chapter’s programs in arts and culture and social services, as well as provide information on scholarships and funding sources.

Hide Shimizu Scholarship

Book Launch
On May 11, 2014, the Toronto launch of Mona Oikawa’s book, Cartographies of Violence, will take place at Another Story Book Shop, 315 Roncesvalles Avenue, from 4 to 6 pm. Free. Please join Professor Oikawa and the Toronto NAJC in celebrating a book which examines the 1940’s internment of Japanese Canadians from the previously unexamined perspective of eleven Japanese Canadian women and their daughters. Live conversations with the author will be part of the launch. Refreshments will be served.

The book shop is TTC accessible. Catch the Carlton 506 streetcar at Main St. station (or at Yonge and Carlton), travel westbound to Howard Park and Roncesvalles, then get off and walk south on Roncesvalles to Grenadier Road. The bookshop is across the street at 315 Roncesvalles Ave. Alternatively, catch the King 504 streetcar at Dundas West station and travel south to Roncesvalles and Grenadier Road. Heritage Tours to Japan and Hawai’i
The Toronto Chapter participating with the NAJC and is offering the 2014 heritage tour to Japan in the autumn, from September 29 to October 8. Places visited are Kansai, Takayama, Kanazawa, and Tokyo. Back again is Ken Noma’s Hawai’I Heritage Tour which runs from August 8 to 17 and tours the Waikiki and Big Island areas (Kailua, Kona, and Hilo) with an emphasis on meeting and interacting with Japanese Hawaiians. Toronto Chapter Donations
The Toronto Chapter has made another donation of $2,000.00 to the Japanese Social Services in support of the invaluable work they do for the Nikkei and Imin families of Toronto.
