President’s Report – June 2013

May 31, 2013 at 2:59 am

This sudden drop in temperature has many in Toronto wondering if summer has quickly passed and winter is on its way. I am certainly pleased that I did not purchase a home with a backyard pool. I am pleased to offer you an update on your Chapter activities.

2013 NAJC annual general meeting

Planning is well under way for the annual general meeting of the NAJC being hosted by our chapter on the September 21st weekend. Meetings will be held at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. We estimate that over 30 delegates and alternates will be in attendance from most of our 13 member organizations from across Canada. A concurrent conference for young leaders will be held and a full slate of activities is being planned.

25th Redress Anniversary Banquet – September 21st

Please mark this date in your calendar and join us to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the historic Redress Agreement at a banquet to be held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre beginning at 6:00 pm. Keynote speaker will be Art Miki who, along with his negotiation team, brought about the agreement. Tickets are $60.00 per person and have been deliberately kept affordable in honour of our Nisei seniors. To reserve your ticket please contact the Chapter office: 416.516.1375 or email us at

Heritage Tour to Hawai’i Summer 2013

The first NAJC Heritage Tour to Hawai’i is set to leave for the islands on July 24th. In the upcoming issues of the Toronto section of The Bulletin, we hope to entertain you with articles by the tour members – nine of whom are from Toronto. A second tour for the fall of 2014 is already being planned so stay tuned.

Manga Book Release

If you have been a faithful reader of The Bulletin you will note that the first book in the trilogy on Japanese Canadian history is about to be released soon. Please stay tuned. This will make a great gift for your Yonsei children.

Bylaw Changes

The Chapter bylaws are currently under review and some major changes will be made around membership. More information to come.

Along with an increase in our membership for 2013, we are most appreciative of your generous donations to date. Your support will allow us to continue to create innovative projects in social services as well as arts and culture.
