President’s Report

March 15, 2013 at 5:18 am

Weather is the great national pastime during the winter months. Ever so slowly, I see the daily temperature rise above the freezing mark and the sun now seems to dally a little longer before giving way to night.

By the time you read this Report, the annual Haru Matsuri held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will have come and gone. If you did attend the event, I hope that you had a chance to visit the Chapter booth and were updated on this year’s program by one of our volunteers. We have a bevy of events planned for this anniversary year of Redress. Let me highlight a few of our activities:
Arashi Junior Hockey Team

We are excited to be the main sponsor of the Arashi Junior Hockey team who will participate in the 24th annual Asian Hockey Tournament and Cultural Event held in May at York University. The team will be wearing a specially designed NAJC logo which will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the historic Redress Settlement. It is our hope that our participation will encourage the yonsei players to engage in discussions with their parents about the dark days of the internment and the victory of Redress. Go Arashi Go!

Japanese Social Services
Founded in 1988 as Japanese Family Services and rebranded in 1999 as Japanese Social Services, the organization continues to provide invaluable counselling services to the Japanese community in the Greater Toronto area. I am pleased to announce that the Chapter will be donating a sum of $2,000 a year to JSS to go towards the hiring of a much-needed part-time counsellor. For further information, please refer to my national President’s Report elsewhere in this issue.

Scholarship Fund
Discussions are underway to offer annual scholarships to two deserving candidates who will be pursuing post-secondary studies at the college/university level related to Japanese Canadian history. It is our hope that the inaugural of the fund will take place in September of this year. I will provide more information in future issues.

Redress Reunion: May 5, 2013
Some of you will be receiving an invitation to a special reception organized by our Chapter to be held on Sunday, May 5th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Momiji Seniors Centre. I erroneously reported last month that about 33 Award of Merit Certificates will be presented at that time – the correct number is around 12. The remainder of the Merit Awards will be distributed in September. All recipients will be notified by mail. Please accept my apologies for the confusion.

Another gentle reminder to please renew your 2013 membership by filling out the form available HERE and mailing it in. Membership comes with your own monthly copy of The Bulletin which will keep you up to date on the latest dates and doings around the country. The Bulletin is the only bi-lingual national publication.
