President’s Message – September

New Beginnings

I believe that all life events, whether negative or positive, are interconnected and occur for a reason.  Community events in Toronto the last few months have brought the Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens Association and the Greater Toronto Chapter of the NAJC to join forces.  Beginning in this September issue, stories from Eastern Canada will grace its pages.  The Bulletin is now the only bilingual, national Nikkei publication in Canada.   It is my hope that the collaboration with this venerable journal will be the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.  The Bulletin, a publication of the Vancouver JCCA, has been in existence for over 54 years and deserves the support of the Nikkei community.

All Toronto Chapter events will now be reported in the Bulletin on a monthly basis as well as news from Eastern Canada.  Current members will now have the journal mailed to them from Vancouver as part of their membership privileges.

I want to give you a list of activities that your chapter has or will be undertaking in the coming months:

(1)  Support of Japanese Social Services;

(2)  Japan Town Memorial – Youth Committee;

(3)  Planning for the 2013 NAJC AGM being held in Toronto;

(4)  Series of celebrations in Toronto for the 25th anniversary of the Redress Settlement (2013);

(5)  Speaker Series;

(6)  Nikkei Manga Project;

(7)  Organization of the Chapter office files;

(8)  Nikkei Kids Day (March 2013);

(9)  Susan Aihoshi book launch;

(10)  UBC students streaming broadcast;

(11) Creation of the Toronto Chapter website.

I will be expanding on these and other activities in the coming months.
